Teen mothers Encouraged to Finish Secondary Education; Explore Entrepreneurship for Economic Independence

Wife of Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Mrs. Juliet Holness MP., urged teen mothers registered in the Programme for Adolescent Mothers at the Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation, Savanna-La-Mar site, to finish their secondary education as the first step in gaining economic independence and providing for their children.

Mrs. Holness made the call in her address to the teen mothers, as part of her Women’s History Month Breakfast series which was held recently.

Score of teen mothers confidently questioned Mrs. Holness about her busy schedule and how she balances her roles as mother, entrepreneur, politician and wife of the Prime Minister.

The girls were left wide-eyed after finding out that Mrs. Holness still cooks for her family and occasionally enjoys a meal of tin mackerel and rice.

Mrs. Holness’ presence inspired the student mothers, some of whom have plans of becoming business owners.

Mrs. Holness encouraged the girls to finish their secondary education, and where possible, explore opportunities to start their own businesses as a way to provide for their children and gain independence.
