The Women’s Centre of Jamaica Foundation has been serving the community of Westmoreland since 1989. The center was initially located in Farm Pen before moving to its current location in Savanna-la-mar in 1991. The beautiful property was leased with the help of the National Land Agency and Mr. Kerr, who also assisted with hiring the first staff members. The center’s convenient location, just a few minutes from the main town, makes it easily accessible by taxi. Over the years, the center has been under the capable leadership of several Center Managers, including Mrs. Rosey Palmer, Miss Irene Gordon, Miss Grizzle, Miss Joyce Bernard, Miss Paulette Heron, and now Mrs. Mellissa Boothe-Anderson. The Foundation’s impact on the community is immeasurable, having provided academic and skills training, personal development, and sexual and reproductive health education to countless students over the years. With the help of schools, social clubs, and churches, the Foundation has organized presentations on Girl’s and Boy’s Day, peer counselor training, male sexual and reproductive seminars, special youth programs, and display booths at health fairs. The Foundation has also contributed to the community’s economic development through various initiatives. These initiatives include a chicken project that supplied chickens to the feeding program, the Montego Bay center, and local businesses and households. The Foundation’s picturesque property also features a natural fish pond used for income generation.
